The Nancy Tokaryk Memorial Trust Fund

Fund Background

The Nancy Tokaryk Memorial Tust Fund was established in 2008 by family and friends of Nancy Tokaryk, who lost her life in a tragic car accident in June, 2008. Nancy was active in several sports at the recreational and competitive level but notably in the sport of women’s field hockey.

During her life Nancy played field hockey at the junior high and high school level, for the Nova Scotia Canada Games team, Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia Senior and Masters Teams, coached and officiated at the school, varsity and provincial level. In 1995, Nancy and her 1975 Canadian National Seniors Championship winning team mates were inaugurated into the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame.

The Nancy Tokaryk Memorial Trust Fund was established to commemorate Nancy’s contribution to the sport of women’s field hockey, her personal leadership and student mentorship, and volunteer community service. Each year a scholarship valued at $1000 is awarded from the trust fund.

Eligibility Requirements

An award shall be given to a female student who participates in the sport of women’s field hockey, is active in the amateur sports community and/or local community volunteer initiatives, and have at least a 3.0 grade point average on a scale of 4.0 and have been formally accepted to a program of post secondary education. The scholarship must be used for tuition at a post secondary institution. Payment will be made in the student’s name to the university or community college of their choice.

Applications will be reviewed by a panel of family and field hockey participants (player, coach, official or administrator) that shall comprise no less than three (3) and no more than five (5) members. The decision shall be by a simple majority vote.

Application Process

The nominee’s shall be identified by the school field hockey coach or athletic director who shall complete and remit the formal application form attached. The sponsor shall complete the Sponsor’s Reason for Recommending this Athlete for a Scholarship portion of the application form describing the nominee’s personal attributes and accomplishments in the sport of field hockey.

Each application should be include the Nominee’s Statement of Intent written by the student, up to 200 words (1 to 2 pages), describing how a scholarship would assist in pursuing their interest in women’s field hockey i.e. , as a player, coach, official or administrator.

Award Notification and Distribution

The successful award recipient(s) shall be notified by the selection committee. Presentation of this Award will take place following the Metro Field Hockey Championship Game. Location: Citadel High School.

A cheque made payable to the post-secondary institution of the scholarship recipient shall be issued in September. Funds shall be used for tuition expenses only.

Nancy Tokaryk Memorial Golf Tournament

Each year the Nancy Tokaryk Memorial Golf Tournament is hosted at Lost Creek Golf Course. The event is $100 per person and includes a 18 hole round of golf, a meal and more. All proceeds from the tournament go towards supporting the Nancy Tokaryk Memorial Trust Fund.  Please complete the registration form below to participate.
